An Experiment

April 4, 2009 at 6:35 pm UTC

I’m really curious: who are all of you nice people? Lots of visitors, great comments, but I only know a few of you personally.

So I thought that maybe we could try something, a way for me to get to know you a little better. What I’d like you to do is this: go into your iTunes music library (or whatever it is you use) and RANDOMLY select five tracks, then post the list here. (If you’ve got iTunes you can just put it on shuffle and take the first five that come up). The only rule is that you must be absolutely, brutally honest. No cheating. Here are my first five on shuffle:

  1. “Dry the Rain” – The Beta Band
  2. “This American Life” podcast (12.2.2008)
  3. “Road to Chicago” – Thomas Newman (from the Road to Perdition Soundtrack)
  4. “Dancing With Tears in My Eyes” – Ultravox
  5. “Lux Aeterna” – Ligeti

See what I mean about being brutally honest? The strange thing is, I think that’s a pretty accurate snapshot of me. (Although I have a zillion albums by stand-up comedians, and none of that came through. And also hundreds of tracks of Ella Fitzgerald, and the complete Beatles collection.)

So c’mon, post your random five tracks, and let me find out a little bit about you.

  • Pratik

I use Winamp to create manual playlists, and I'm hesitant to load the whole library into a playlist because I think it might crash, so I don't think I can do this with absolute fairness. So, I sorted my library by track title and will scroll randomly, without looking, to five tracks.

    1) "A Mad Russian's Christmas" by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
    2) "Esprit de Corps" march, by Robert Jager, performed by my high school wind symphony.
    3) "Medea's Meditation and Dance" by Samuel Barber, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under someone named Schenck.
    4) The finale, "Toccata", from Thomas Pitfield's "Sonata for Xylophone", performed by myself.
    5) "Chinese Dance" from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, performer unknown.

That's actually a terrible cross-section, except that it covers some different genres of stuff. I should also say to be fair that most of my non-art music that I have on CD I've removed from my computer, to save space… but I guess that means I don't listen to it a whole lot, either.

  • Brian

To ensure true random-ness, I went to random.org and generated random numbers from my current library of 1611 files. The results:

1491. The world has turned and left me here – Weezer
    920. Horn Concerto No. 4 in E flat major: 3 Rondeau: allegro vivace – W.A. Mozart

Pretty good cross section, I'd say. That I went to random.org to generate random numbers may say more about me than the 5 songs I listed…. :)

    "Body and Soul"- Charles Mingus
"Widow of a Living Man" – Ben Harper
    "Blues" – Art Blakey/Clifford Brown/ Horace Silver/Lou Donaldson/Curley Russel (A Night at Birdland Vol. 1)

    Fantastique – Lionel Hampton
Coma Girl – Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros
    Mlada: Lithuanian Dance – Rimsky-Korsakov

This was a pretty good list, except it doesn't even touch on my lengthy collection of musicals…or 80s/90s rock. Ah well. :)

  • Tessy

Hi Eric, excited to discover your blog tonight via facebook!

We met a couple years ago at the ASCAP Expo after the panel you spoke on. I was there as press for a Colorado music magazine and since went on to focus on my own music career and found a non-profit that presents music-driven interdisciplinary arts events and workshops. Still hopeful you'll make it back this way soon as I believe my husband James and I were gone on our honeymoon when you ended up having your show here.

In any case, here are my 10 utterly, brutally random tracks (I'm doing 10 since it's the 10th – my birthday!):

    1. "Medicine Eater" by Yōko Kanno from Escaflowne Original Soundtrack 2 (1996)
    2. "Mute" by Techno Squirrels from the Mute EP (2005)
    3. "Le Räi C'est Chic" by Cheb Mami f. Sting from Dellali (2001)
    4. "It's A World Of Prejudice" by the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts student cast of Taking Root: A Groundbreaking Musical (summer camp program 2005)
    5. "Golden Girls (Morley's Apollo Mix)" by Kinetic from Kinetic (1992)
    6. "???? [live]" by Zero 7 f. Tina Dico, transmusicales de rennes (2001) – this is all the tagging it has, sounds like it goes into an improv or reinterpretation of one of the songs from the album When It Falls
    7. "14 Ghosts II" by Nine Inch Nails from Ghosts I-IV (2008)
    8. "All I Want" by Joni Mitchell from Blue (1971)
    9. "Shake Those Windows" by Athlete from Vehicles and Animals (2003)
    10. "Livin' La Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin (sad, but true)

I have no idea what these 10 tracks say about me out of some 16,000 plus in the library, but it sure was enjoyable to listen to them … and I have a feeling that now I'll be doing this for another hour!

Hope to see you again sometime soon! :)

    All the best,

    Melissa (& James) from Denver

Hide and Seek – Imogen Heap
    When Doves Cry – Prince
Man on the Corner – Genesis
Vocea – Cirque Du Soleil Varekai
Kyozo no Kehai – Shadow of the Colossus (Game Soundtrack composed by Kow Otani)

Wow, well…That pretty much sums it up. >___> Some important sections of music missing, but that's a pretty good summation. 8D This was interesting!

You should look up Kow Otani's music. I absolutely adore the soundtrack for Shadow of the Colossus. The orchestra is fantastically adept at creating atmospheres and feelings, chords that spirit the listener away to someplace else.

Mamadou Diaby by Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra
New Born (Paul Oakenfold mix) by Muse
    In Liverpool by Suzanne Vega
    Laz by Omar Faruk Tekbilek
Solo Tar by Keyvan Saket & Saeed Laari

I have to say, this makes my music taste look far more exotic than it really is. West African, Turkish, and Persian all in one shuffle–I'm surprised. But even considering that I couldn't possibly give an overview of my music in five songs, that's not a very good representation.

  • Montario Benjamin

    Exultate – Samuel Hazo
Soundings: Gizmo – North Texas Wind Symphony
Carnival XV. Pantalon e Colombine – Robert Schumann

    3. Possession – Nicholas Hooper (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Soundtrack)
    4. Getaways Turned Holidays – Meg and Dia
    5. Zydrate Anatomy – Repo! The Genetic Opera Soundtrack

That's a lot of soundtracks. And that doesn't even BEGIN to describe my love of music! My mp3 player seems to adore Repo! that sometimes every other song I turn to is from that musical. It's nuts…and I love it!!

Murder from Haftor Medbøe's debut CD "Charm"

Ballybrolly Jigs and The North Star from "Rubai" by Flook

Shapiros Korohod from "The Rough Guide To Klezmer"

Kannunkaataja from the disc "Aitara" by the Finnish group Värttinä

A Southern Harmony track "Webster" from "The Sound of America" by Sheena Phillips' group The Magpies

The dice seem to have fallen in one small area of my collection. What's more, there's only one disc that anybody could buy without a difficult search. Well, if this is how I must be represented, I'll just say that they're all worth repeated listening, and lots of people would enjoy Flook and Värttinä.

I threw the dice a few more times until they began to pick tracks of yours, but then I decided that was cheating. Besides, CD tracks don't begin to capture the thrill of hearing you conduct the National Youth Choir in Southwark Cathedral a couple of weeks ago.

1)"A Child Must Grow" by Don Ross

    2)"Last Goodbye" By Jeff Buckley

3)A Hungarian Dance by Brahms, but It's otherwise unlabeled!

4)Section VII of "Music for 18 Musicians" by Steve Reich

5)"Saturday Night's All right for Fightin'" by Elton John.

This is actually a really fantastic snapshot of what I like to listen to. You've got the solo virtuoso fingerstyle guitar in there with Don Ross (Fantastic guitarist), and Steve Reich. Basically the two dudes that I wanted to be selected. I've actually never even listened to the Jeff Buckley track, funnily enough. I kinda wish that other dudes I like such as Arvo Part, Nick Drake, and Radiohead made their way into the snapshot, but it's pretty good anyway.

    7. Tehillim (Part II) – Steve Reich (Minimalist Classical Composer)

Not quite accurate, but then I make a lot of instrumentals that involve sampling various records, so some stuff I have just for that purpose. I listen to a lot of Christian and Gospel music but I like bits of all genres.
