An Interesting Experiment in Bilbao: A “Live” Virtual Choir

November 17, 2011 at 10:48 pm UTC

Last week, as part of a five day residency in Bilbao, I gave a talk and concert at the spectacular Guggenheim Museum. As part of the event we sent four different choirs to different parts of the museum and performed The Seal Lullaby, with just the piano and I in the grand foyer. (The singers had come from all over Spain, and we had rehearsed the piece for the first time earlier that afternoon). Frankly, the experiment worked better than I imagined it would, very musical, very present.

Here’s a video:

Amazing! Quite the success I must say!

There really are no words. Technology is allowing us to connect and create like never before. This really is pioneering some amazing and truly gorgeous performances.

I was there -on the first screen of the left hahaha- and I learned lots of things about eric whitacre’s music while I was having a really good time! Thank you :)

So beautiful. Temple-like. You don’t know this yet, but you are the Priest of Cool.

Could you imagine? Just like the woman in the Great Alaskan Bush who particpated in VC 2.0 using satellite as her only connection to the world, I think Eric has stumbled onto something really exciting here. For those musicians who don’t have access to a music program in their community, and for the future prospect of a LIVE virtual choir project, I think with the technology in the video here that the sky’s the limit regarding bringing all people from any country together! Just Imagine the possibilities!!!! I think there is a gold mine to be found here for anyone interested in brainstorming awhile.

    Absolutely Beautiful. :)
