Hila Sings My Arrangement of “Voices Carry”

Posted on May 25, 2010 at 12:14 pm

Voices Carry by Til’ Tuesday is easily one of my top 5 favorite 80′s songs. Good god did I have a crush on Aimee Mann.

I arranged it for Hila and string quartet, and she sang it as part of her breathtaking concert this past weekend. It’s a live recording, so it’s a little rough around the edges, but come on: wouldn’t you want to hear an entire album of this stuff? I could arrange Depeche Mode, The Cure, Talking Heads, English Beat. Bring. It. On.

Here’s the live recording:

And here’s the original:

The Voices Carry arrangement is great, some arrangements of popular song, perhaps for different solo voices, choir and string quartets would be lush!

Also where can I get tickets for the Eric Whitacre SIngers concert in London?

i think an arrangement of The Cure's "why cant i be you" would be kinda interesting to hear.

I would pay cold hard cash for such an album. Especially if "London Calling" was on it.

Radiohead usually translates well to orchestral arrangement.

I would love that album. Make it so, captain!

Beautiful recording and arrangement, but the YouTube video's blocked in Australia.

Thank you for posting this!! Great arrangement and wow her voice just soars on those high notes. I was so curious how this was going to sound–and I love it and it totally works. Definitely would love to hear a whole album of this stuff.

I'd buy it. Things from Depeche Mode like "Sometimes", are already most of the way there, so you might consider staying away from that. The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" could be wonderful.

This was lush and gorgeous. I will never get over how filled with emotion and haunting Hila's voice is. I can never get enough of listening to it. Thanks for the post.

I have to be honest here, I'm crying… and it's the fifth time I've listened to it. So, with that said; uh yes please, its time to launch that project idea— what about some YAZ :)

Just Beautiful. Thanks for this. I could listen to her forever. You are a lucky man Mr Whitacre!

I love when popular music is transcribed into another music genre. Paul Anka's "Rock Swings" album was freakin brilliant in my humble opinion. Come to think of it, I have a buch of compilation CD's from the mid to late 90's of artists "remaking" songs "current". Seems that was a popular thing to do at the time. I have a whole album of groups doing the Carpenters in '96 grunge. Hahah. LOVE IT!

    Dear Eric Whitacre,

If you arrange a Depeche Mode song, then you will officially be my hero.

To answer your question, i would DEFINITELY buy an album of this stuff! You may even make some pop music of TODAY sound decent!
