When David Heard, Performed Live by The Eric Whitacre Singers
Posted on February 29, 2012 at 10:08 am
The Eric Whitacre Singers in London’s Union Chapel last October. This performance took place on the night before we went into the studio, where we recorded this – and other pieces – for the new album Water Night.

Wow, Eric… I don’t think I’ve ever seen you conduct with such a look of despair, anger and grief before! I had heard this piece was “painful” for you, but never before had I seen such raw emotion from this piece. The close up shots of you directing were fantastic. (I’ve never seen a live version of “David” but I want to someday.)
The sopranos, as usual, blew me away in the middle section (especially when they hit the high notes, the REALLY high notes). And what a venue! The lighting and camera work were perfect for the setting. Thanks for sharing this video.

There are just no words I could come up with that would do any justice here (though I can’t help but try anyway). The goosebumps on my arms and moist eyes are proof positive though that even after hearing this song hundreds of times it remains the most affecting and powerful piece of music I have heard in my 34 years.
I am just awestruck by everything about it–not only by how you could compose it in the first place, but with how perfectly the Eric Whitacre Singers perform it here under your direction.
My only regret is that I wasn’t there to hear it live. It’s high up on the bucket list though. I do hope you will continue to perform it, despite how gut-wrenching it must be for you (which was quite evident in the video). It’s your pièce de résistance in my humble opinion.
You and the choir should be so very proud of this performance.
P.S. Not sure you can do anything about this but I wasn’t able to view the video on my iPhone–YouTube says “The content owner has not made this video available on mobile”.

out of all the pieces revealed to be on Water Night this is the one that I’m most excited about!

I was overwhelmed by this piece when you and the singers performed it, sooo beautiful yet obviously painful at the same time. I feel so honoured to have been present when this was recorded.
