Frequently Asked Questions
Virtual Choir 3 is closed for submissions but we've left the below FAQ in place for reference purposes.
General Questions
What is the Virtual Choir?
The Virtual Choir is a global project to create a user-generated online choir. We're asking singers to record themselves singing "Water Night" and we will then create a final video which will include contributions from all singers.
How old do I have to be to join?
You have to be 14 years or older to join VC3, in line with COPPA legislation and generally accepted international practice. If you are under 14 and can provide clear approval of a parent or guardian, email support@virtualchoir.org and we will see what might be possible.
How will my data be used?
Signing in to become a member of the Virtual Choir allows us to trace the cities and regions of the world in which members live, and to contact you when it goes live and with occasional other updates. Your data will NOT be shared with any third parties or used for any other purpose.
Is there anything I can do to help spread the word about the Virtual Choir 3?
Absolutely! You can:
- Tell your friends and family about it
- Make videos about your experience of participating in the Virtual Choir and post them to your or the Virtual Choir YouTube channel
- Plan a "sing up", during which you and your friends can meet up and sing and record your entry on the same day
- Help a friend learn Water Night and record and upload
- Let a friend use your computer and internet connection if they don't have access or are having problems
- Set up a Google+ Hangout and get together with others around the world to practice Water Night
- Follow the Virtual Choir Facebook Page
- Post about the Virtual Choir on your own Facebook and Twitter accounts
How can I contact the Virtual Choir Team?

Questions about submissions
Are there any rules for what I can or cannot submit?
Your video(s) must be recorded before Feb 2, 2012 and you must agree to the Terms and Conditions for this project, which you must read before contributing. Please remember that this must be your own work and cannot contain any third-party content that you don't have the rights to use. You should be the only person in your video and wear black clothes. No pictures, words or logos, or we won't be able to use your submission.
Can I include other people in my video?
No. Please ensure that only you feature in your video.
Can I submit multiple videos?
Yes, you're free to submit as many videos as you like, provided that you are able to sing the entire part (no lip-synching, please) and that all videos are uploaded by Feb 2, 2012.
Can I withdraw my video?
Yes – sign into the Virtual Choir website and click 'Delete' next to the thumbnail of the video you want to delete before Feb 2, 2012
Where is my video stored?
For VC2, videos were uploaded to YouTube. Some of the videos were not tagged precisely enough and there were a few that we were unable to find. This time we are using Viddler so that all the videos can be uploaded to the same place to make sure that we don't lose even one!
What do I need to know about recording sound?
It is important to think about the audio accompanying your video, as sound recording can affect the overall quality of a video. If possible, enhance your recording by using an external microphone. Please be aware of the following:
- The built-in microphone on your webcam will struggle to record usable sound if your subject is any further than 3 feet away from the camera.
- Be aware of the background noise – try and record somewhere quiet, if possible.
- Avoid touching the microphone and think about where it is positioned in relation to your subject.
- Our host platform, Viddler, has acknowledged that a small percentage of users will hear audio interference on playback. They are working to fix this. This is a playback problem only, the files we download are clean and crisp.
Help! I'm having problems recording
This time we're using Flash-based video recording. This requires that your browser and flash plugin are up to date so if you're having problems recording, please try the following:
- check you have the latest version of Flash installed and update it if necessary.
- check you have some free space on your hard drive
- check that your browser is up to date
- try using Google Chrome
If that doesn't work, please upload to YouTube.

We have a very vibrant community of singers on our Virtual Choir Facebook Page - come and say hello and ask for help.
If you still need assistance please email us.
Where can I view other people's submissions to Virtual Choir 3?
Other people's videos are not publically available however, if you have a recording that you believe is good enough for others to use to learn from let us know and, if chosen, we'll feature it on the Resources page.
Questions about the final Virtual Choir 3 video
Will you use footage from everyone who submits a video?
Yes. Every contribution, provided it meets our requirements (particularly audio and video quality), will be included in some way in the final film. Until we know how many videos we have it is impossible to say exactly how they will all be used.
Will I get paid?
No, there is no monetary payment – just fame and glory! Singers from around the world will join together in Virtual Choir 3 to create a beautiful film and an audio-visual installation to be experienced by millions.
Who owns my video when I submit it?
You will retain ownership, but by uploading your video you agree to our Terms and Conditions which grant Music Productions Limited the right to include your video in the final film and to use the final film in all media for ever.
When and how can I see the finished video?
The video will be posted to the web in Spring 2012. Join Eric's Fanzone to be the first to find out about the launch.
