It’s both optional & anonymous and will involve giving two saliva samples (it’s discreet!) before the concert and at intermission. Anyone who has already bought a ticket and is interested should email Meg with your name, age and gender. Volunteers will be chosen randomly and everyone can take part in questionnaires on the night. Woo hoo!

Deep Field https://ericwhitacre.com/blog/deep-field Thu, 29 Jan 2015 08:54:09 +0000 http://ericwhitacre.com/?p=27545 The first three minutes of Deep Field in skeletal sketch form – I call it “emotional architecture.” I will make drawings like this for every moment of the piece before I compose any of the actual music.

The Writing Process in the Early Stages https://ericwhitacre.com/blog/the-writing-process-in-the-early-stages Fri, 14 Nov 2014 18:14:33 +0000 http://ericwhitacre.com/?p=27392 continued]]> I’m working on a big new piece for choir and orchestra, which will be premiered by the Minnesota Orchestra and Minnesota Chorale in May. Thought some of you might like to see what the process looks like in the early stages.

I’ve been planning/conceiving the work for several months now but still haven’t written a note of music. Tonight I sketched out – in prose – what I imagine the basic structure will be. After this I’ll begin drawing abstract pictures, further refining the emotional structure. Probably will start writing the actual notes and rhythms in a couple of weeks.

Lux Nova for wind band and choir https://ericwhitacre.com/blog/lux-nova-for-wind-band-and-choir Sat, 04 Oct 2014 09:57:19 +0000 http://ericwhitacre.com/?p=26846 Just occurred to me that the band version of Lux Aurumque and the new choral version (Lux Nova) could be performed together seamlessly. The choir would just need to sing a half step up. Dying to know what this sounds like!

Music students https://ericwhitacre.com/blog/music-students Tue, 09 Sep 2014 10:15:06 +0000 http://ericwhitacre.com/?p=26641 continued]]> As the semester grinds on you may feel intensely burnt-out. You may even consider dropping out of music altogether. If that happens, go back and listen to your favorite recordings, make music with your friends, do anything you can to remind yourself why you loved music before you started studying it. An education in music can be a very good thing, but it can also squeeze the life out of any love you ever had for it. Don’t let it.
