Advice for the Emerging Composer, Distilled

If you want to learn to compose, compose a piece of music. Don’t ask anyone how to do it. Look at other scores, write your best piece, FINISH IT and then get real human beings to perform it. You will learn more from that single experience than you ever will from a teacher.

“Trust Me”, ca. 1986

A pop song that I wrote, sang and recorded, ca. 1986. As best I can remember I used a Roland Juno 106; an ESQ 1; a Korg DDD1 drum machine; and an early generation emulator. Everything was recorded onto a four track recorder.

And yes, that’s my real hair.
