Come Sing in a LIVE Virtual Choir

January 29, 2013 at 8:14 pm UTC

I need 32 singers to join me and form the world’s first LIVE VIRTUAL CHOIR at the closing presentation of the TED conference on March 1st, 2013. I am looking for 32 singers from 32 different countries.

We are working to display the Virtual Singers from across the globe on large screens, performing simultaneously with a live choir on the stage at TED. Virtual Singers will see a live video feed of me conducting and will hear a feed of the choir from the stage.

If you would like to take part in this exciting and special event you need to have a reliable and fast broadband connection, and must be available on Thursday February 28th 7:45pm-9:30pm PST and Friday March 1st 11:30am-1pm PST.

In addition to this, there will be individual and group technical tests with the production team at a time of mutual convenience. You will be required to sign a waiver prepared by the hosts of the event. Please write to [email protected] by Monday February 4th with the following information:

  • Name
  • Age (16-25, 26-40, 41-60, 61+)

  • Alex MacRae

What piece of music will you be singing. I am available for the times displayed.

  • Liz B.

THe minimum age is 16. I will be 16 on Feb. 28. Is that acceptable?

  • Colter

Wow, and I though the feedback delay in the large echo-y chapels was bad; how about around the entire planet? Good luck to all the people who will be a part of this.

  • Colleen

Please tell us what song – I only want to submit if I know it’s something that I am awesome at :)

  • Lora Madonia

I was also curious as to what piece would you be using, and will the singers be given time to learn/practice it?

  • Hadeer

I’m definitely interested, but what piece would we be singing??

  • Martinus Gray

If I might ask, what song is being performed?

  • David Johnson

This is without a doubt the most extreme online collaboration imaginable. It is fraught with unforgiving technical issues, numerous unforeseen restrictions requiring literally a virtual miracle, and requires a tall dive into the murky unknown.
♫ Sounds good … when do we start ♪

  • Mirely Ruiz

I totally want to take part of this but I’m so insecure about it!! Specially without knowing what choral piece we are going to sing and if we go through auditions… I want to know first what are we going to sing that way I can prepare myself. I am available for those hours… Please sent me an email with more info.

  • Marykate

How are you choosing who gets to do the Live VC? Video Audition?

  • Suzanne

This is so exciting! Best of luck to those who will be a part of the project! I’m curious to see how the Skype connections will be perfect– there has always been a few seconds delay between calls… how will this be fixed? I can’t wait to see!!! :)

    This sounds fun

Your FB page is getting questions re: minimum age. It appears that 16 is the minimum, but not confirmed. Might be best to address this on the page. If under 16 is possible with parental consent, that be cool.
    Trying to help …

I know that there are going to be hundreds of people applying from the US to be a part of this, but I have a middle school student who I would really love to help apply (I am a choir director). Would there be legal problems with her being that young, or should we give it a try? Trust me when I say that she is talented enough. Please let me know what you think.

  • irina

if only it would have been more accessible – time wise – for Europe… maybe next time

    • http://mariapetrova.com Maria Petrova

Irina, I can translate written communication for you. Or you can use Google Translate for written words, that will give you enough of an idea of what is said. Not sure how much English you’ll need for the rehearsals. I hope it will work for you!
