I'm Back, Baby!

Posted on September 2, 2008 at 3:12 am

Wow… what a summer. Trips to Denver, NYC, Copenhagen, Israel and London. Lots of great music, a little time off, and now I’m back, ready to work. And blog.

In the next couple of months I’ll be posting as much as possible, sharing stories from this summer; writing about my new projects; and sharing cool news about Paradise Lost and the recording(s).

I’m also going to start a little series called ‘Advice for the Emerging Composer.” I get so many emails from young composers trying to figure it all out, and I’ll try to share a few things I’ve picked up over the years.

Glad to be back!

Wow, I am kind jealous that you got to go to so many places. :) I can't wait to read more blogs!

I've just started frequenting this site earlier this summer, but I'm thrilled about what you said on tips for new composers. I've tried my hand at it, but have yet to go deeper. I'm looking forward to it!
    Salutations from the East Coast!

    Eric,

Good to have you back. I wonder if you take requests? :) It's been mostly secular music from you lately, and though you have a way of making everything sacred, I'm wondering if you're looking at any religious texts? Some of my favorite pieces of yours are When David Heard, Lux Aurumque and i thank You God.

Your "Emerging Composer" advice ought to be interesting; it's not every day somebody emerges as a composer… but I'm sure a lot of us would like to hear more about the process. Mail-ins to publishers doesn't seem like the most effective way to start.

Make more music, and so will I.

So glad to hear you're back. I sent you an e-mail about album art for Paradise Lost. Wonderful that you're keeping busy. Let's stay in touch when you have a moment.

P.S. Very inspiring, your new "Advice for the Emerging Composer". Looking forward to reading it.

    Me too!

p.s.- Don't worry Corey, I wrote "kind jealous" instead of "kind of jealous." :P

    Hello there, Mr. Whitacre,
Let me just take this moment to say something completely irrelevant to this particular blog entry of yours..
I just can't stop loving the chord progressions you used in the very beginning and end of 'When David Heard'. This the minor scale/key at its highest possible beauty. Thanks so much for creating this and inspiring me to write my very first choral composition myself.
I also have a question about lyrics. How can you make sure a certain poem you like and want to use in a composition is copyright-free? And if a text/poem IS copyrighted, how do you obtain the rights to use it, if possible?

Do we have an ETA on the release of the new BYU Singers album you recorded last winter? I'm very much looking forward to that CD, it was fantastic during recording and I want very badly to relive those moments.

    Hey Eric,

Glad to hear you had a great summer! I'm also glad to hear there's PLOE news on the Horizon! I've been following along since Apple featured you in 2002, and got to see the concert version in Chicago. Unfortunately I couldn't make L.A., but I'm definitely excited to get a chance to experience more of your wonderful work.

Just thought I'd drop a note. Keep up the fantastic work!
    ~Chris

I'm not sure what an ETA is, but the new BYU Singers album is on sale now at the BYU Singer's sight.
